Softball: UHH manages split at Biola

The UH-Hilo softball team split a pair of nine-inning doubleheaders against Biola on Tuesday at La Mirada, Calif.

In Game 1, Alexis Lacy pitched 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a 1-0 loss where the Vulcan bats managed just two singles. The freshman left-hander allowed 11 hits and no walks and struck out one.

Lacy (4-6) has a 1.38 ERA in 76 1/3 innings, allowed 79 hits and walked eight with 28 strikeouts. In her previous two starts covering 19 1/3 innings, Lacy has given up four runs while UHH has scored two runs in a pair of losses.

Jennifer Morinishi pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the win. She had the game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning.

In Game 2, the Vulcans had 11 hits and defeated the Cougars 5-2, snapping a five-game losing streak.

Alyssa Lugo batted 4 for 5 with three RBIs and Nikki Zielinski went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for UHH (12-14, 11-12 PacWest), which is fourth in the conference

Sara Bhatt pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Bhatt (7-2) allowed three hits and one walk. Tehani Seto started and gave up two runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Raylene Royal went the distance in the loss. She gave up five runs (four unearned) on 11 hits and one walk.

Allie Beck had two hits and an RBI for the Cougars (18-13, 13-9), who are third.

Men’s golf

The Vulcans improved by 22 strokes in the final round at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, Calif., to jump from 14th to 12th place in the 15-team field.

Dustin Franko shot a 1-over-par 71-74-72—217 total to tie for 13th. Other Vulcans were Keith Ng, 10-over 76-79-71—226 total, tie for 36th; Andrew Otani, 14-over 83-78-69—230 total, tie for 53rd; Nick Gomez, 14-over 78-80-73—231 total, tie for 56th; Noah Lau, 23-over 82-76-81—239 total, tie for 72nd.

UHH next plays in the PacWest championships April 18-20 in Arizona.

Tennis

The UHH men (3-8 national, 3-5 PacWest) are fourth in the latest PacWest rankings. The final ranking is April 11 for the eight-teams postseason.

The UHH women (2-8, 2-8) are eighth where 12 teams qualify for the postseason.
